Windows App (Microsoft Remote Desktop)

Windows App (bundle ID com.microsoft.rdc.macos) is Microsoft's official remote desktop client for Mac, previously called Microsoft Remote Desktop. It lets you connect from your Mac to a remote Windows PC, a corporate virtual desktop, or cloud services such as Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 — essentially giving you a live view of and control over a Windows environment, all streamed securely over the network. Nothing Windows-related is stored on your Mac; the Windows session runs on the remote machine. It is a free download from the Mac App Store and is owned entirely by Microsoft.

When it runs hot
High CPU or fan activity from Windows App almost always means an active remote desktop session is open and working hard — streaming video, audio, or heavy graphics from the remote Windows machine takes real processing power on your Mac. It can also spike if the app has frozen or become stuck after your Mac woke from sleep, or if a high-polling-rate mouse is connected (a known issue Microsoft has addressed in updates). When no session is open, the app should be nearly idle.
Safety tier
Safe — User-owned and reversible — acting carries no real risk.
Safe action
quit
Worst case
Closing the app ends your active remote session, which could interrupt unsaved work on the remote Windows machine. Your Mac itself is unaffected.
